Planning & Management

Woodland Consulting Image

Managing woodlands is a long term business and sound planning is essential to ensure they deliver benefits to the owner in a sustainable manner. Setting long term objectives with the owner should be the first step and this can be underpinned by a zonal system of management priorities to ensure that forest operations in each wood have the correct emphasis.

A 10 or 20 year management plan is usually the best way forward and this should ensure that all future decisions are consistent with the long term aim of the estate. This can require a detailed inventory of the woods, usually linked to aerial photos and a digital mapping system.

Practice Profile – Detailed Inventory and Long Term Forest Plan
Touch Estate near Stirling commissioned Woodland Consulting to carry out a detailed survey and mapping exercise of the woodlands and this was used as the basis for a 20 year Forest Plan, grant-aided by the Forestry Commission. As well as blocks of commercial forestry and a large area of semi natural broadleaves, Touch has a nationally important Designed Landscape which dates back to 1742, so it was important that the plan could accommodate a variety of management objectives. A planning system has now been put in place which will ensure that where there are competing interests, future management decisions are consistently based on the appropriate balance of objectives.

Practice Profile – Biodiversity Management Plan
At Pitcarmick Estate near Blairgowrie we were asked to carry out a Biodiversity Management Plan for the woodlands, funded through the Scottish Forestry Grant Scheme (SFGS). For this project Woodland Consulting acted as project manager, recruiting specialist consultants to carry out the detailed survey work, then drawing it all together into a composite plan. Of particular importance on Pitcarmick is the nationally important population of black grouse, a species in general decline throughout the country. The plan outlines measures to improve the habitat for black grouse and identifies changes to the woodlands that might benefit this important species.

Practice Profile – Recreation Management Plan
Newbyth in East Lothian was the subject of a Recreation Management Plan we carried out for the owner in order to identify opportunities for woodland recreation. This has led to the creation of a small path network, with associated car park and signage and is being well used by the public.
