Woodland
Certification

Certification recognises that consumers have the right to know
whether the forest product they are purchasing comes from a sustainably
managed forest. In this country, the agreed standard is the UK
Woodland Assurance Scheme (UKWAS).
Woodland Consulting is a member of the UPM Tilhill Group Certification Scheme and all our systems have been accredited
through UKWAS. We currently have 8 estates in our UKWAS portfolio, covering
a total woodland area of around 4,500ha.
Our accreditation demonstrates:

|
What
is FSC Certification? |
This means that the woodland has
been independently inspected and evaluated according
to strict environmental, social and economic principles
and criteria as agreed by the Forest Stewardship
Council AC.
|
|
|
| |
|
| • |
our commitment to sustainable forestry |
| • |
management practices that protect the environment and enhance
the landscape |
| • |
a philosophy of local involvement in decision making |
| |
|
|
|
| And our clients are assured of: |
| |
| • |
improved access to timber markets |
| • |
adherence to health and safety policies |
| • |
compliance with legal and contract requirements |
| • |
reduced costs of certification |
| |
|
|
| As well as greatly improved access to timber
markets, certification brings real cost benefits to the woodland
owner from the improvement in day to day operational practices,
which create valuable efficiencies and help ensure compliance
with industry standards. |

Practice
Profile
Meggernie Estate in Glen
Lyon has directly benefited from FSC
certification provided through Woodland
Consulting. The marketing of a 15,000
tonne clearfell has been greatly enhanced
by the FSC label and has resulted in
a far better return to the estate than
would otherwise have been the case.
Newbyth Woodlands in East Lothian has also
been included in our group scheme and this
will help in future plans for woodland restructuring.
Of particular interest is a large |

area
of 75 year old oak which is being managed for
production of quality hardwood timber. FSC
certification has proved to be very helpful
in the specialised marketing that is required,
especially from thinnings which tend to produce
a wide range of log quality. |
